Chemical Free Beauty

Everyday products such as shampoo, deodorant and make up contain a high quantity of chemicals that can harm your body.

Skin is the largest organ of the body. It easily absorbs substances that go straight into the blood stream. On average we use around 12 different products a day. This can mean you are putting hundreds of harmful chemicals into your body on a regular basis. It can be really difficult to know what chemicals are in a product because the ingredients labels always list scientific names that are hard to pronounce. Here are some chemicals to look out for when you are buying beauty products and how they can harm your body:

Parabens (Ethylparaben, Methylparaben and Propylparaben)

These are used to preserve the shelf-life of cosmetics and are one of the most widely used preservatives in the world. They are found in shampoo, fake tan, shaving gel, toothpaste and many more products. They have been linked to breast cancer, as well as fertility issues in men.

Fragrance (Phthalates)

Soap, lotion, bubble bath, shampoo all contains phthalates, which are a chemicals used to give a product its scent. These chemicals are known to disrupt hormones, and are linked to PMS and skin irritations.

Lead is a toxic metal that can be found in products, such as whitening toothpastes and lipsticks. Worrying side effect can be seizures, reproductive problems such as reduced sperm count and motility, and kidney dysfunction.

Formaldehyde is a chemical that can be inhaled and absorbed through the skin. It is used in nail polishes, shampoos, baby shampoos, and liquid body soaps. Side effects can include skin irritation and nausea.

If you find any of these ingredients in the products you use then they may have been harming your health without you knowing. When you are shopping for products you should be carefully reading the labels, especially any baby products as their skin is a lot more sensitive than an adults and they could have a stronger reaction.

Products containing natural ingredients will not have any artificial flavours or colourings. They will have been grown and processed organically and will not have used any chemicals or synthetic preservatives such as Parabens.

Many products claim to be natural and it’s easy to be fooled when you hear words like botanical, plant extracts and hypoallergenic. They may contain a small amount of these ingredients but they will be mixed together with other chemicals and additives. Always look out for the certified organic label when picking a product. Many products have on their labels what percentage of the ingredients are natural.

Start replacing your non-natural products with organic, vegan and cruelty free ones where possible. Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics and Everyday Minerals are vegan and cruelty free. Check out our other vegan products which can be found here.  If you are throwing away products that you believe to be harmful then recycle the packaging.

When you go shopping, read all the ingredients carefully. If you don’t understand what an ingredient is, research it or ask someone who may know. You should know exactly what a product contain before you buy it.
